Filipino Inventor Wins another International Gold Medal
Invention cures skin cancer!
The top award in the recent International Trade Fair-Ideas-Invention New Product (IENA) held in Nuremberg, Germany last November 3, 2005, was presented to Filipino inventor, Rolando dela Cruz. His new invention, DeBCC ®, is a cream for the treatment of the most common type of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma. IENA, a prestigious international organization based in Germany, annually seeks out outstanding inventions in the various fields of science. Mr. dela Cruz bested 54 other inventors and DeBCC was judged the most significant invention for the year 2005 beating more than 1500 other entries.
DeBCC ®, a formulation developed from extracts from cashew nut and other Filipino herbs, again, demonstrates Filipino ingenuity. Surgeons from the University of the Philippines and the Philippine General Hospital led by Dr. Eric Talens, who did the first clinical trial, submitted the results of their studies to the IENA. A case series of 14 patients with skin cancer in the very delicate area of the face, initially thought of as hopeless by some doctors and rejected by most plastic surgeons, was reported to be cured. By mere application of the cream, with no radical and acceptable surgeries or procedures, these patients’ skin cancers were cured within 16 weeks. No recurrences were noted even after a follow-up of more than 2 years.
Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer in the world. It had been estimated that the annual incidence is 1 million, over 500,000 and 190,000 in the USA, Europe and Australia, respectively. 1 Moreover, the reported rate increased by 5% in the USA, and 20% in the Australia between 1985 to 1995. 1-3 More than 80% of all skin cancers locally are basal cell carcinoma. 4 Left unchecked, skin cancer in the middle third of the face may cause horrible disfigurement and contractures, as well as loss of function for the eyes and nose. Usual treatments, which involve extirpative surgeries, have the sad complication also further disfigurement since a wide margin of normal tissue have to be removed with the cancer. Should the cancer be located at or near vital structures of the face such as the eyes, nose and the mouth, horrific defects results from attempts to surgically excise these cancers.
Not a stranger to international prizes, Mr. dela Cruz and the dela Cruz family of inventors, accepted the IENA gold medal as the latest addition to the numerous awards already received from Russia, Japan, Korea and the United States since 1997. These honors hark back to their humble springs in the mind of Mr. dela Cruz, whose hopeful quest to become a commerce graduate and to provide for his family led him to experiment and to formulate treatment for various skin problems. He found a successful formula in his DeWart and DeMole creams which is currently very popular in the simple treatment for the removal of warts and moles.
